{tab=Sacraments and Devotions} {slide=Mass Sunday 11:00am, 6:00pm; Mon. 8:30pm; Wed. 12:00pm; Thu. 12:00pm}{/slide}{slide=Reconciliation 30 minutes before all Masses} Frequent use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the best ways to stay in the grace of God and overcome sin. If you haven't been for a while and don't remember what to do, be not afraid. The sacrament is a time for experiencing God's mercy. Just tell the priest that it has been a while and you don't know what you are supposed to do, and he will guide you through it. You can also download our Guide for the Sacrament of Reconciliation or pick one up by the door to the confessional.{/slide}{slide=Adoration Thursdays 10:00-3:00 (except during Mass)} During adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist is exposed in a monstrance so that when people go to pray, they can actually see the host, which makes for a more intimate prayer environment. The time of adoration is for silent prayer. Because the Eucharist is in the monstrance instead of locked in the tabernacle, it is important that there always be at least two people there, that is why we have people sign up for specific times, but if you want to just pop in, you can. If you want to sign up for a specific time, just add your name to the sign-in sheet at the door. If you don't know how to pray, talk to the chaplain. That is what he is there for. Say, "Father, I want to pray more, but I don't exactly know how," and he will help you to find the style of prayer that works best for you.{/slide}{slide=Rosary Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00pm} What a powerful devotion! The rosary is a school of prayer in itself. While praying the rosary, we learn about what a relationship with God ought to look like, we meditate on the life of Jesus, we allow Mary to guide our thoughts, and raise our hearts and voices to God in praise of His greatest creature. When we come together to pray, it is even better. Download our Rosary Guide or pick one up outside the chapel.{/slide}{slide=Morning Prayer Monday-Friday 7:35am} The Liturgy of the Hours is the "official prayer of the Church." All around the world, Catholics, especially priests and religious, stop to pray seven times a day. This prayer is becoming increasingly popular among lay people, especially young people. Many choose to pray the principal hours of Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer. A group of students get together every morning to pray Morning Prayer. All are invited to join them. There are extra books available, and if you simply tell someone that you are new, they will be happy to teach you how. If you would like to start praying it on your own, see the chaplain to learn how and to acquire a book. {/slide}{slide=Night Prayer Tuesdays and Thursday following Rosary} The Liturgy of the Hours is the "official prayer of the Church." All around the world, Catholics, especially priests and religious, stop to pray seven times a day. This prayer is becoming increasingly popular among lay people, especially young people. Many choose to pray the principal hours of Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer. After our Tuesday and Thursday rosary, we pray Night Prayer together. This is a great way for newbies to learn the Liturgy of the Hours since it is shorter and a little simpler than Morning Prayer. All are invited to come. There are extra books available, and if you simply tell someone that you are new, they will be happy to teach you how. If you would like to start praying it on your own, see the chaplain to learn how and to acquire a book.{/slide} {tab=Classes and Formation}{slide=Apologetics Mondays 9:00-10:00pm} Apologetics is defending your faith. It means being able to tell your athiest friend why you believe in God, or your protestant friend how you know that the Eucharist is really Jesus and why he should pray to Mary too. Each week we spend the first 45 minutes talking about one major topic, then take the last 15 minutes to answer random questions. Since we look at totally different topics each week, this is a great class for those who may or may not be able to make it each week due to work schedules or whatever. Feel free to invite non-Catholic friends who would like to learn more about the Catholic Church. {/slide}{slide=Great Adventure Bible Timeline Wednesdays 6:00-8:00 pm}A clear understanding of the underlying Scriptural narrative is essential to all Bible reading and study, and for this reason The Bible Timeline is the first foundational study in The Great Adventure Bible Study Series. The Bible Timeline is an immenseley rich study, diving deep into each time period of the Bible. Salvation history is covered from its beginning in Genesis through the coming of Christ and the establishment of the Catholic Church.The program includes dinner, small group discussion, and a video presentation. The meal and program are free and all materials are provided, except a Bible--BYOBible.{/slide}{slide=Courageous Love Women's Bible Study Wednesdays 3:00-4:00pm} This group follows the first book in the women's Bible study series by Stacy Mitch. "The purpose of this Bible study is to help you discover and reflect upon what Holy Scripture teaches about women and our pursuit of holiness. In this study, you will examine and answer questions about various Scripture verses and contemplate your ideas about God." The group is led by Newman Center students. The book is provided for participants. {/slide}{slide=Boys to Men Bible Study Thursdays 8:00-9:00pm} Need a spiritual workout? Boys to Men: The Transforming Power of Virtue is a Bible study designed specifically for men who want to build their spiritual strength. Each chapter focuses on a different virtue necessary to help raise a new generation of godly men. {/slide}{slide=Marriage Preparation 2nd Sunday 7:00-8:00pm} Couples who plan on getting married in the next year need to contact either the Newman Center chaplain or their own pastor to begin preparing for marriage. At the Newman Center, couples meet individually with the chaplain to discuss things within their own relationship that can be a particular source of strength for them and things that they should work on. All engaged couples come together monthly to learn about God's purpose for marriage, His moral teachings, and other things that apply to every married couple. While it is permissible for a Catholic to marry a non-Catholic, Catholics must get married in the Catholic Church for it to be valid, and the Church requires adequate preparation (normally at least 6-9 months). However, since our culture gives us so many bad examples of marriage, couples should contact their priest as soon as they are engaged to become as well-prepared as possible. {/slide} {tab=Other Activities} {slide=Newman Club Meetings First Thursday of the Month 9:00-10:00pm} The Newman Club provides social and outreach activites at the Newman Center and on campus. It organizes weekend activities, intramural teams, homecoming events, service projects, and other things to make Catholicism more visible. Dues are $10/year and members receive free T-shirts as well as discounts for club activities and trips. {/slide} {slide=Free Lunch Wednesdays 11:00-1:00} Lunch is provided for anyone in the PSU community. It is a good chance for us to get together, meet new friends, and build each other up. {/slide} {slide=Social Nights Fridays and Saturdays} The Newman Center is open every Friday and Saturday night. We try to have an organized activity at least one night during the weekend, but even when there isn't something organized, you can generally find people hanging out. So if you looking for something to do, free of pressure, stop in for a movie, a game of pool, or just to hang out. All are welcome. Bring your friends. {/slide} {/tabs}
